Ladder Drill

Goal: improve within the scoring zone & with pressure putts

Description: This variation of the ladder drill focuses on short putts below 15 feet / 5 meters, where PGA Tour pros gain the most strokes on amateur golfers. As every putt matters, it is a great exercise to simulate putting under pressure like in a tournament situation.

Take three balls and start at the shortest distance from the hole. Once you make all three in a row, you successfully completed this station and can move to the next one. The drill is completed when you have completed all distances. A common variation to this drill is putting on a flat surface. You leave the tees in place after completing a station and have to move back a station when holing less than 50% of the balls in your current distance. You can also increase the number of balls to increase the difficulty level.

Setup:

  • choose a hole in a subtle slope to putt to
  • place tees in a straight line every 3 feet, from 3 feet to 15 feet from the hole
  • scan one putt after another and place a tee for every aiming point at the hole height
